Canon 5D Mark III Low Light Concert Pics, High performance in Low Light

Last weeks concert i attended at B52 in Bangalore will be a memorable event in my life for the following reasons

  1. Its the first time i get to see Albatross live dishing out their twisted version of old school heavy metal with several slices of horror (lyrical content)
  2. also the first time i get to witness Kannada Old School death metal band Dhwesha
  3. But most importantly i finally get to use the 5D Mark III at a concert!!!
The Riff 52 gig on March 31st, 2012 featuring Shepherd, Dhwesha, Albatross and Bevar Sea in the first metal concert/gig in India to get covered with the Canon 5D Mark III

the venue was pretty perfect to test out the low light capabilities of the 5D Mark III. i had earlier posted some low light pics of people who were posing for me and sitting still but concert photography is a totally different ball game. No time for poseurs here.

ok, speaking of the venue, its actually a photographers nightmare. The light was the lowest i have seen in all the gigs i have previously covered. and i was so tempted to use the 50 mm f 1.2 L prime lens but then again decided to go with the wide angle zoom 24 to 105 f/4 L IS USM lens.

i shamelessly used the external flash for 95 percent of the concert but here are some pics with ISO ranging from 6400 to 12800 something i am sure was never done before.

the post pic above was clicked at ISO 6400, and with a narrow aperture of f/5.6

please note for all the pics u will see here the aperture was constant at f/5.6 , which helped in reaching the ISO range of 12800

at ISO 8000
used the wide angle at 24 mm and nearly got the entire band (Albatross) in the frame with the exception of the band mascot Dr. Hex who was behind a very large speaker to the left.

at ISO 10000
the flash reflecting off the guitar player was coming from a fans camera . the timing was perfect for me to shoot this at ISO 10000

another shot at ISO 10000 of Dr. Hex slapping the bass. the small venue with people packed like sardines didnt really help me, but i managed to plough my way to the other end of the stage to take this pic.

at ISO 12800
this pic was taken earlier when Dhwesha was performing. Adarsh 'Red Devil' frozen at ISO 12800!

another pic of the Red Devil molesting the bass captured at ISO 12800. typically i would have used a flash to freeze the action, then would have converted the pic to Black and White, but not today.

and my fav pic of the gig again at ISO 12800
if looks could kill, i would have been dinner that night, esp with this stare i got from Dr. Hex during the final few moments of their set. i just love the tone here and at ISO 12800 its pretty unbelievable! another thing thats pretty unbelievable is WHY IS DR. HEX WEARING A INVERTED ABDOMINAL GUARD ON HIS FACE?

some questions wont have answers.... but at least with the 5D mark III we know now thats its a great camera to use in such extremely low light conditions. cant wait to shoot a wedding at low light.

Conclusion: B52 has set the bench mark for being the venue with the lowest light possible. the lighting was so low, it could have been an UNDERGROUND event (pun intended). and at the same time, the 5D Mark III has definitely set a new bench mark for capturing crisp and clear images in the lowest light possible. and this is great news for people like me, who love to cover concerts and metal gigs in India and now i cant even complain about bad lighting!!

The 5D Mark III changes everything!
